Use Extreme Caution When Using Credit Repair Companies

For someone trying to eliminate debt, what could be worse than a scam credit repair deal. While promising to help you with your bad credit, the companies offering these deals will usually charge you far too much, put you into an illegal situation, or make your financial situation worse. Watch out for the most common of them.

1) Credit repair organizations hinting that false information on a loan or credit application would help your situation or that try to get you to apply for an alternate identity. In addition to being dishonest, it is not legal. Should you find that a credit repair company is trying to get you to apply for a loan or credit with false or misleading information, you now know to disassociate yourself from them.

These actions could cause you to be charged with fraud, and although it was at the advice of the credit repair company, you will be the one responsible. It would be very unpleasant, to say the least, to have to deal with both credit and legal problems at the same time.

1) Credit companies that do things that you could easily do for yourself, but charge you a premium to do – like preparing a budget. Charges asked of you prior to providing any services should also make you wary.

There is an abundance of great information online for anyone wanting to eliminate credit card debt and repair their credit. Do this before you pay someone else for much of the same information.

1) Credit repair companies that take money from you for the purpose of paying your creditors, but keep that money in an escrow account. This scam is very common and is in fact a huge problem for the debtor.

This is the way this scam works: the debtor pays money to the credit repair company, presumably to pay off their debts. The money accumulates in an escrow account that is opened by the credit repair company. The idea is for the company to eventually use the money to pay off your debts once the balance in escrow matches your debts. You can get scammed if the company starts paying themselves all sorts of administrative fees, but not taking card of your creditors so that they start increasing your interest charges and possibly starting legal action against you. This so-called credit “repair” can wind up doing just the opposite and further damaging your credit rating.

1) Credit repair companies that are too hasty to get you to sign a contract without going through it in detail, don’t listen to what you have to say, or try to pressure you. These types of companies can’t be trusted and you should move on to someone that can be.

5) Credit repair companies that claim to provide instant credit repair, despite how bad your credit currently is. Such a claim is simply misleading as no company can legitimately provide this. The reality is, it may take several years to repair a bad credit history despite what the company may claim. It is generally best to focus you attention mostly on how to eliminate credit card debt, knowing that your credit history will improve over time as a result.

Some companies will claim that they can remove your poor credit history by disputing entries in your credit report. This information is not to be believed. True and accurate information cannot simply be removed from your credit report. Even though a credit bureau must investigate claims of inaccuracies within thirty days, this by no means suggests that the claim will somehow automatically be removed. Be aware of this untrue claim so that you can refuse to do business with any credit repair company making it.

Hopefully, these tips will help you avoid credit repair scams and allow you to properly locate companies that can truly help you with your credit card debt elimination plans.
